PROFILING OF WOMEN GROUPS IN LAIKIPIA NORTH BEGINS By James Koinareh

Before the inauguration of the UNDP GEF SGP project, , there is a need to conduct a baseline survey.  This is meant to determine the position of these groups, especially on their current strength and challenges. Yiaku Laikipiak Trust is on the process of conducting a comprehensive baseline survey, for 4(four) women groups that are targeted by the project in the area, in an exercise that began last week The four women groups are Sieku, Bokish, Kuri-Kuri and Makurian, all of which are legally registered.

The main focus of the survey, is geared at establishing the main activities of the groups and income base It is equally very important to get to know, of the existing market outlets for all the finished goods here How many members are in the group is also important, office bearers and management of elections Potential success, strength , opportunities weaknesses and challenges, are also things to consider...    The exercise which was conducted by the support of a professional consultant, is meant to end today.

Pastoral women interact much with environment, and therefore have a direct influence in conservation It is them who fetch firewood, construction materials, and therefore are key to any decision made. Many of them are so poor in that, they depend on charcoal to sustain their families on a daily basis..  The project  aims to empower women in seeking alternatives, in terms of secure livelihoods  support Building their capacities in skills development, are the major objectives of the UNDP supported project.
